What to Do When Your iPhone Screen Cracks

A cracked screen can look worse than it is, but the safest next step depends on what still works and whether the glass is exposed.

Check what still works

A crack does not always mean the display has failed. Test touch response across the screen, brightness, front camera, earpiece, and Face ID or Touch ID. Note any black areas, flickering, colored lines, or touch spots that do not respond. Those details help identify whether the damage is limited to the glass or has reached the display underneath.

Protect your hands and the device

If glass is lifting or splintering, avoid pressing on it and keep moisture away from the phone. A temporary screen protector can help contain loose fragments until you can have it inspected. Do not use tape over camera openings or buttons, and avoid putting the phone in a pocket with keys or coins.

Back up before service

When the phone still turns on, make a fresh iCloud or computer backup. Keep your passcode available for the technician if testing is needed, and remove any sensitive accessories. A repair professional can check the display assembly, frame, and seals, then explain the right repair path.
